Match Report: YCAC v Kitakami played on Sun Oct 26th
Report by: Simon Ryan | Photos by Kyoko Obayashi

With three Top Club League matches scheduled on a sunny day at YCAC there was bound to be action and drama aplenty, and so it proved.

First-up, YCAC had an 11:45am matchup with Kitakami – with YCAC sitting bottom of the table and Kitakami one spot above there was a mid season wooden spoon at stake for the loser and a leg-up for the victor.

Things started well enough with a quick try and a 5-0 lead, it was shaping to be an easy day on the hill for the boys in blue. Not to be however, as the oppo rallied to lead 13-5 at the break. Five minutes into the second half they extended their lead 20-5. Things began to look grim when 3 minutes later a YCAC prop was sent to the bin..it was at this point that Rich Freeman(YCAC member, Englishman, and media guru on all things rugby related in Japan), having arrived ten minutes earlier as a spectator, decided the game was a forgone conclusion, he turned his back on his own club team and waddled off mumbling something like “bunch of losers are not worth the ink from my pinkie-like pen”. Does Rich leave early from all matches he attends? That may explain a few things..anyway, no poms were on the pitch either so that left the air very fresh.

With 22 minutes to the finish line, the 14 blue tortoises on the pitch sensed that the Kitakami hares were about to have a nap in the shade…or perhaps the steroid in the halftime water bottles just kicked-in…or maybe it was the cooling effect of the cloud cover moving over the hot sun. Whatever it was, the unfit-tired-beaten-looking bunch in blue shirts suddenly transformed into incredible blue hulks and turned the match on its head. They bullied and bashed their way to scoring 37 unanswered points. Even the ref couldn’t halt the blue wave as he sent yet another YCAC player to the bin.
Kitakami awoke to score the last try but too little too late as YCAC ran out victors in a highly entertaining match 42-27.

Post-match, Kitakami were a lovely bunch of blokes and very chatty about the match. But not even a YCAC hosted function of beers and curry could help them(or us) understand what had transpired on the park as they piled onto their bus for the eight hour journey back to Iwate. Perhaps that same journey overnight before the match may partially explain something…that’s what Rich might say if he saw the game.

PS. A first win for the season and a four try bonus point means YCAC move from 9th to 7th on the log. See table and results at this link:

http://www.rugby.or.jp/clubinfo/club/2014/higashinihontopclub_hoshitori.pdf

PS2: The drama/comedy, or near tragedy, occurred in the second match of the day when a burly Hokkaido BB’s prop brushed the goalpost and the top 3m of steel upright came crashing down, narrowly avoiding the ref, Sharks players..and a possible lawsuit.

YCAC Over 35s Tournament
SCORES: Beat Hakuhodo (by default), Beat Phoenix 26-0, Beat Waseda Club 27-0 (semi-final), Beat Acorn 19-0 (final) – Coach: Simon Ryan – Photos: Kyoko Obayashi

Short of players just a few days before the game, it all came together on the day, a blend of (relative) youth and experience to which the opposition had few answers. The forward display was characterised by supremacy in the line-out, where JK and Yoshi Amano took every ball, thrown with unerring accuracy by new hooker Baba Tatekawa, and mostly solid scrums. And the backs, perhaps aware that they could not depend on forward numbers in support at the breakdown, played with flair, aggression and control, keeping the ball in hand, running at the opposition from everywhere, and rarely turning the ball over. The half-backs, Kats and Cherry, led the attack, and the centre combination of Uchiyama and Bill Baker formed the perfect combination of speed and strength to punch through the opposition defence and score themselves or release to the wings and full-back, always in support, to finish off the movement.

On seeing the draw our first opponents, Hakuhodo, decided that they had better things to do and scratched, so our first actual game was against Phoenix, who were dispatched with minimal difficulty by a YC&AC team still finding first gear. Waseda Club were expected to provide stiffer opposition, and so it proved, but they could not get enough of the ball to threaten. When they did get near the YC&AC try line, the defence was resolute and effective, and the backs, getting into their stride, proved lethal in counter-attack. So we moved smoothly into the final against Acorn, but they could not resist the remorseless blue waves of YC&AC’s offensive play, and succumbed relatively meekly to concede the prize to the home team for the fourth year in a row.

Uchiyama was crowned Player of the Tournament, for a dominant attacking display, by the former title holder Simon Ryan. Uchiyama’s was the outstanding performance among several strong candidates among the younger players, but mention must also be made of solid performances from the older generation: the reunited lock pairing of club historian Mike Galbraith and Glenn Page (combined age 130) revived monochrome memories of their imperious heyday in the 1980s, while the senior front five (combined age 301) creaked only once or twice and held firm in the tight, although content to leave dominance of the loose play to the more mobile and youthful back row of JK, Yoshi Amano and Yuji Kitano.

While, sadly, it seems that the time has come for O’Driscoll to hang up his boots, it seems that for a number of the YC&AC players, to misquote Mark Twain, rumours of their retirement have been greatly exaggerated. Who would bet against yet another “last hurrah” in 2015?

Squad:
1 Simon Tross Youle (captain)
2 “Baba” Tatekawa/Scott Sizemore
3 Yoshi Nike/Pete Davison

9 Katsumi Matsuo
